The History of Hayner's Holiday Open House
The Holiday Open House has been a cherished tradition since the Hayner mansion first opened its doors as a community cultural center on December 5, 1976. That inaugural celebration welcomed visitors to explore only the first floor of the newly restored home. The same rooms that Mary Jane Hayner once filled with family, conversation, and music.
Over time, what began as a simple open house has grown into a full-house celebration of art, music, and community. Today, every corner of the mansion, from the grand staircase to the solarium, is transformed with festive décor created by local artists, volunteers, and community groups. The event honors nearly fifty years of creativity, collaboration, and holiday spirit at the Hayner.
Saturday, December 6 – Children’s Day
A day filled with joy, laughter, and family fun!
Children’s Day begins at 1:00 PM with a special presentation by the Ballet Shreffler Dance Company, whose young dancers will share what they’ve learned under the direction of Miss Cyndy in the historic ballroom.
The River City Puppets return with a new whimsical show at 2:00 PM and again at 3:30 PM, delighting audiences of all ages. Santa himself will be in the Study from 2:30–4:45 PM to visit with children.
Arts and crafts activities will take place throughout the afternoon in the East Room and Art Studio, offering hands-on fun for the whole family.
All activities are free, though puppet show tickets (also free) will be available at the Hayner Front Desk beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday.
Sunday, December 7 – Holiday Décor & Music
On Sunday, the Hayner opens its doors for a serene afternoon of live music in the East Room and tours of the home’s spectacular holiday décor. Guests can wander through the beautifully decorated rooms while enjoying cookies and punch including Director David Wion’s coveted Wassail, a warm holiday punch served only once a year. Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon as guests enjoy performances from talented local musicians and student groups, including:
- Troy High School A Cappella Choir (Troy Tones) directed by Rachel Sagona
 - Titus Bowman, guitar and vocals
 - Eliza Crist, piano
 - String Class from Troy Schools, led by Stephanie Strope
 - Alex Brundrett, piano
 - Joss Dennis, country and pop classics
 - Danny Schneible, folk and holiday favorites

Each performance adds to the warm, community spirit that makes the Holiday Open House a true Troy tradition.
This Year’s Theme: Christmas Movies
This year, our decorators draw inspiration from the magic of Christmas on the silver screen. Each room captures a moment or memory from beloved holiday films — from timeless classics to family favorites.
The Art Studio will pay tribute to Elf, with bright paper chains, snowflakes, and a joyful homage to the toy-store wonderland that Buddy built overnight. Elsewhere in the home, you’ll find elegant and whimsical nods to other holiday films, each interpreted through the creativity of our local decorating teams.
As you wander through the mansion, we hope you’ll feel the same warmth, wonder, and nostalgia that make both the movies, and this event, so special each year.
