Shirley DeLaet is a self-taught artist whose work includes illustration, design, and the fine art of oil & watercolor painting. Within it all, lies her passion for the beauty found within everyday life. Her subjects are intentionally varied
and filled with the discovery of underlying beauty found in
the ordinary, and sometimes, in the strangest of things. She doesn’t hesitate to add a surprise, or a touch of humor, in
her works providing it tells the story she wants to depict. Everyday life sparks her inspiration and labels of genre do
not confine her imagination.

Many years ago, Ginger started painting painting her children's portraits. She also works with watercolors & just completed her granddaughter's portrait. She has studied sculpting, watercolors, & stained glass at the Rosewood Arts Center in Dayton, Dayton Art Glass, & Indiana University, in addition to studies in Florida & St. Charles, Mo. After she retired she wanted to teach the "Joy of Painting" technique so she became a Certified Bob Ross Instructor at New Smyrna Beach in Florida in 2012. Have you ever said, “I enjoy drawing, but I don’t know how to start, or continue to improve my skills?”  Then, this series of classes is for you! Each group of three classes will explore different media uses and concepts while teaching essential skills. The classes in March will use pencils and charcoal/chalk, through beginning drawing lessons emphasizing the Elements & Principles of Art. The April classes will focus on exploring color media like pastels, colored pencils, etc. The last group of classes in May, will experiment in the “less forgiving” media through drawing with inks, markers, and diving into the areas of mixed media.

There will be three sessions of three classes, but you don’t have to attend all of them. Although all the sessions are all sequential in design to encourage confidence in skill building, please feel free to join in when your schedule allows. Creativity is an interesting pathway, with many discoveries along the way. All materials will be provided.

Foundations of Drawing the Head:

A Beginning Colored Pencil Workshop

John Middick

This session is perfect for artists who are new to drawing portraits or new to working with colored pencil. We will focus on the essential building blocks of drawing the head including proportions, structure, light and shadow, and simple color decisions. You will learn a clear, approachable process for starting a portrait with confidence, even if you have never drawn a face before.

This workshop stands alone, and it also serves as the ideal warm-up and preparation for the more in-depth Saturday session.

Color & Rendering for Portraits:

Intermediate Colored Pencil Workshop

John Middick

Image description
Image description

All students will receive the reference photo, line drawing, Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper, and a printed workbook guide on the day of the workshop.

Important Note on Pencils

Substitutes are absolutely welcome. If you own Prismacolor Premier pencils and prefer to use those instead of the Luminance, Pablo, and Derwent Drawing pencils, that is perfectly fine. Just bring a larger set, about 40 pencils or as many as you have. If you’re unsure which colors make good substitutes, bring what you have and we’ll identify alternatives together in class. The instructor will also have a variety of pencils available to try and borrow during the class.

This second session takes everything a step further. We will spend more time developing realistic color, value transitions, and the nuanced rendering needed to bring a portrait to life. While the class is designed around intermediate skills, beginners who attended Friday’s fundamentals workshop will be comfortable here since Friday provides all the prep work needed for success on Saturday.

If you consider yourself an intermediate to advanced artist, you will fit right in. There will be plenty of opportunities to refine your technique, deepen your understanding of color, and gain higher-level insights throughout the day. Artists who are newer to

portraiture or to colored pencil are also welcome!

All students will receive a workshop document (workbook) with step-by-step guidance, tips, and follow-up instructions so you can confidently finish your portrait at home and use these skills in your future art pieces.
