HOLIDAY & WINTER CARD-MAKING WORKSHOP

Students will make five unique and special cards perfect for Christmas and those cold winter days. Supplies, including card stock, patterned paper, die-cut shapes, ribbons, gemstones, stamps, and other embellishments are included in the fee.

Let’s make some fun jewelry for the upcoming holidays. In this class, we will be making earrings for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. No prior experience needed. Students will learn basic jewelry making skills. Students will make 3 pairs of earrings during this class. Supplies included in the fee. *Students must register at least one week prior to start of class.

Beginning Jewelry Making: Bracelets

Beginning jewelry making, no prior experience needed. Students will learn the different types of stone beads and how to design and create a unique bracelet. Students will make two bracelets. This is a wonderful way to make personalized, one-of-a-kind  gifts, or keep your creations for yourself.  

*Students must register at least one week prior to start of class.

She began making jewelry as a result of classes that she took at the Hayner Center several years ago. Connie also appreciates the versatility and ease of use of alcohol ink as an artistic medium.

Our stained glass workshop isn’t just a class. It’s a full experience, teaching you the fundamentals of the art. Over the course of 5 hours, you’ll cut, grind, foil, and solder your very own piece of art from start to finish. You choose your glass, your colors, and your pattern. Over 50 designs are waiting for you, and all materials are provided.


Why so much time? Because this isn’t a quick “follow along” craft. It’s a true artisan process where you walk away with something that’s 100% yours. Whether you’re a beginner or already experienced, we guide you step by step while giving you the freedom to make your piece as unique as you are.


Essential skills you'll learn include working with glass cutters, grinders, copper foil, and a soldering iron. 


What You'll Learn

  • Supplies & Tools: Understanding the tools and materials needed, such as glass cutters, grinders, and copper foil. 
  • Pattern Creation: How to design and create your own patterns for stained glass projects. 
  • Glass Cutting: Techniques for precisely cutting glass into different shapes. 
  • Glass Grinding: Using a glass grinder to smooth and shape the cut edges of the glass pieces. 
  • Copper Foiling: Applying adhesive copper foil tape to the edges of the glass to prepare them for soldering. 
  • Soldering: Joining the foiled glass pieces together using a soldering iron and solder. 
  • Adding Finishing Touches: Some classes also cover adding wire and chains for hanging.

The skill of writing in traditional calligraphy is an ancient and beautiful art. This class will introduce

three different styles, and supply the various tools and materials used. Creating handwritten words

and communications that have a special look, is unique in our world of digital communications.

CREATE THREE FUN HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS

Filigree Flower (Nov. 3): The art of paper filigree (aka quilling) will be introduced, and a colorful flower will be created to take home.

Zuchertuten (Nov. 10): Students will create their own cone-shaped paper boxes that can be filled with candy. A printed pattern will be provided to color or collage, cut, fold, and glue. A ribbon will be provided for hanging.  

Filigree Snowflake (Nov. 17): The art of paper filigree (aka quilling) will be introduced, and a white snowflake will be created to take home.

Age: 15 - Adult                                     

Fee: $75 per 3-week class

Students may register for just one or two dates at a cost of $25 per date.

Debora Cook

Debora A. Cook earned her BFA and Art Education Certificate from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1976. Her career as an art educator has spanned over 40 years and has included teaching in private and public art education. She has completed advanced studies in fine and applied arts. These opportunities included the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Newberry Library in Chicago, Ill., and Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. For more than 20 years, Debora was the Summer Artist in Residence at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. During this time, she worked with both staff and campers, connecting them to the intersection of nature and creativity. Over many years, she has participated in living history events and art shows, displaying and selling the fine crafts of Paper Filigree and Calligraphy, as well as her drawings and paintings.

This class spans all 4 sessions. The first session covers the basic process and tools and focuses on the traditional patterns and techniques. The remaining sessions add non-traditional methods and error correction. We use wax and dye to create intricate, colorful designs on empty egg shells. All supplies and a kit to take home are included in the fee. Wear old clothes in case of an “oops” with the dyes.

Barbara Deschapelles has lived in Troy for over 40 years, and worked in the computing and Information Technology sector most of that time. She and her husband have two grown children and two grandchildren. Barb has been making Ukrainian style eggs for better than 25 years, but continues to learn new and different techniques. The interest in these eggs started at home when she was a child, and her family displayed several eggs each Easter. She has taught this class for a number of years.
