Art became Shirley's life's desire at a very early age. She was determined to be an artist, so when the time came to make adult choices, she chose to enter the world of commercial art as an illustrator and designer. It was a good choice for Shirley, as it led her to a 30-year career in the business of creating for others.

Upon retiring from her career, she picked up her brushes again to continue the creative process, but this time it was to paint for the pure pleasure of painting. She starts her process by studying her subjects and knowing them well. Telling their story on canvas or paper is a big and important part of her creative process.

Viewers will find both still life and landscape paintings in her portfolio. Beauty guides her subject choices because she has always found beauty everywhere, even in the simplest, or strangest, of things. "But, it's the story behind the beauty that guides me through my painting process."

"Transparency and movement dominate both my landscapes and my still life works. Just as I am inspired by rolling hills or the movement of ocean waves, swaying tree limbs, and grasses in nature; I
am motivated to paint soft folds in fabric, as they roll beneath and around the objects in a still life. When painting En Plein Air, my spiritual senses are awakened as I study shapes, colors, and changing light. Sparkling, transparent waters of my landscapes are echoed by reflections of cut glass and other objects in my still life paintings. Transparent oil and transparent watercolor pigments find their way into all of my creations."

The Secret Weapons of Colored Pencil
Melissa Miller Nece

Picture
"Mangoes" by Melissa Nece
Arm yourself with the secret weapons of colored pencil!
As a fine art medium, colored pencil is versatile, inexpensive, and easy to master. Whether you are new to colored pencils or experienced with them, you will discover techniques for effective results. Working with specialty erasers and household items, you will learn how to smooth and blend color and to create convincing textures rapidly—without heavy pressure and repetitive strokes. You will then apply these techniques on a class project. You may also choose a project of your own. As you work, you’ll learn details to look for, what should be brought out or minimized, and shortcuts to help you finish more quickly. Discussion will include the characteristics of various pencil brands, color choices and mixing tips. Supplies provided include a 9x12" pad of Stonehenge paper, assorted sample papers, erasers and surprise tools, color and outline reference images for exercises and practice projects.

The first morning will include a series of exercises to familiarize you with tools and techniques, as well as discussion of pencil and paper types. In the afternoon, you will work on projects provided in your kit. The second day, you may continue the same projects or choose another from available references and outlines or bring your own. There will be mini-demonstrations as needed, depending on class interests (three-color palette, skin tones, foliage, backgrounds, miniature art, etc.). There will be plenty of individual attention and frequent group demonstrations.

Pencil sets will be available for use in class for those who do not bring their own.
