Can a portrait be both painterly and realistic? Many artists assume these qualities are at odds—but in this 5-hour
workshop, you’ll discover how they can work together in beautiful harmony.
Join award-winning artist and instructor John Middick for a hands-on drawing experience where you’ll complete a portrait drawn in colored pencil, from layout to final details. You’ll learn how to blend expressive softness with crisp
accuracy through real-time demonstration and guided instruction using colored pencils, solvent, and a paintbrush.

In this 5-hour workshop, you’ll learn:
  • How to build accurate proportions with confidence
  • Using solvent and a paintbrush to create painterly effects
  • Layering pencils for lifelike skin tones and transitions
  • Rendering facial features to show expression
  • Knowing when to sharpen detail—and when to create soft edges
All students will receive a workshop document (workbook) with step-by-step guidance, tips, and follow-up
instructions so you can confidently finish your portrait at home and use these skills in your future art pieces.
This workshop offers something for everyone—from beginners eager to learn the foundations, to advanced artists wanting to create expressive and realistic portraits using solvent-enhanced colored pencil.
